How Public can demand Govt action to prevent public commemorations of LTTE & display of terrorist insignia

LTTE is a terrorist movement banned in Sri Lanka & continues to be banned by 32 nations inspite of LTTE being militarily defeated in May 2009.

Pro-LTTE elements have used “civilian deaths” as a pretext to hold commemorations not only in Sri Lanka but overseas annually.

We can empathize with the fact that for a mother/father a terrorist remains their daughter or son. We have no issue in a mother mourning that terrorist son or daughter. But to mourn her terrorist child, she does not need a LTTE eternal flame, LTTE yellow & red flags, LTTE Eelam flag or photos of dead LTTE to garland, nor does she need to wait one whole year to mourn at a LTTE event. There is no one preventing her mourning her child at home or place of religious worship. However, no one can claim to be mourning a child & use that as an excuse to display terrorist paraphernalia & showcase to the world as such displays often come with huge funding.

Therefore, the GoSL must take action against any public display of terrorist insignia as LTTE is a proscribed terrorist movement & such display is a violation of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The oft used excuse for inaction is that the authorities have not received a formal complaint.

Therefore, the general public are asked to write & ask authorities to take action to prevent commemoration of LTTE terrorists.

SAMPLE LETTER

Urgent Request to Prevent Public LTTE Commemorations and Display of Terrorist Insignia

Dear Sir/Madam,

As concerned citizens committed to preserving national security and unity, we urgently request your immediate attention to prevent any public events that commemorate the LTTE or promote separatist sentiment through the display of LTTE flags, insignia, or tributes to known terrorists or lighting LTTE eternal flame. This commemoration is generally held in Mullaivaikkal area, however where ever commemorations are to be held to commemorate LTTE dead must be stopped.

We respectfully request that:

  1. The Sri Lanka Police and tri-forces take proactive measures to monitor, restrict, and prevent any events glorifying the LTTE in any form.
  2. Government officials must ensure such commemorations — whether on public or private land — are subject to the laws of Sri Lanka regarding banned organizations and incitement to violence.
  3. All relevant authorities must issue clear public guidelines ahead of May 18/May 19 and other sensitive dates.

We recognize and respect the grief of all who lost loved ones in the war — civilian or military — but we stand firmly against the glorification of terrorism under the guise of memorials.

Let Sri Lanka move forward in peace — not under the shadow of a past that threatens to return under new names and banners.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
