Racial Killings in US leading to riots & protests from 2020-2022

 

 

 

50 incidents between 2020 & 2022 in US linked to racially motivated killings and protests that ensued thereafter. While systematic racism continues in US, there are coloured-people who have risen to greatest in US. At times we have to wonder if the “racism” is part of a modern divide & rule policy to make communities angry with each other. In some areas where blacks are unfairly treated, ther are other areas where white Americans are equally treated badly.

 

The reasons associated with these protests and riots were – systematic racism in US against black people associated with police violence.

 

2 April 2022

• Patrick Lyoya shot in back of head by police officer in Michigan.
• Protestors gathered outside police dept demanding name of police officer involved.

 

2 Feb 2022-8 Apr 2022

• Protests after Amir Locke shot & killed by a Minneapolis police officer.
• Vigil was held
• On 4 Feb hundreds began protesting.

 

24 Jan 2022

• Civil rights trial of Kueng, Lane & Thao who was at scene of George Floyd murder
• Protestors surrounded courtroom building

• Unarmed Jason Walker shot & killed by police on 8 Jan

• 23 year old Somali-American shot & killed by Minneapolis police during traffic stop.
• 1^st killing by Minneapolis police since murder of George Floyd on 26 May 2021

• Vehicle-ramming attack – 1 demonstrator killed / 3 injured

• Hundreds of African-American gun owners marched in Oklahoma to mark those murdered in the Elmer Geronimo Pratt Gun Club in Texas

• Business owner David McAtee shot & killed by 2 policemen on 1 June 2020.
• Almost year later State of Kentucky announces they will not be charged.
• Demonstrators protested
• Brother of slain McAtee also arrested & charged with unlawful assembly

• 42 year Andrew Brown Jr fatally shot in the back of head by police.

 

20 Apr 2021

• 16 year old Ma’Khia Bryant – African girl shot by Columbus police & announced dead in hospital
• Protests started and ended following day

• Protests after 20 year old Daunte Wright is shot & killed during traffic stop by police officer

 

15 April 2021 – Adam Toledo protests

• 13 year old Mexican American Adam Toledo was shot & killed on 29 Mar 2021 by Chicago Police. Police claimed the boy was holding a gun

• Rochester protests
• 200 protestors march in New York after 9 year old girl was handcuffed & pepper-sprayed by police.
• Video footage of police restraining and scolding the girl
• Protestors ripped away barricades – hundreds took to streeets.

 

12 Feb 2021

• Clashes between protestors and police
• 11 arrested

• March 2020
• Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American woman, was fatally shot in her Louiseville Kentucky apartment when 7 police officers forced entry into the apartment as part of an investigation into drug dealing operations. Protests erupted in July when police were not charged.On 3 October 2020 over 400 NFAC members & 200 armed protestors marched in Louisiana seeking justice for Breonna Taylor

• 21 year Robert Aaron Long taken into custody
• Increase in racism against Asian Americans

 

23 Feb 2020

• 25 year old Ahmaud Arbery (black) was killed by 3 white men & found guilty on 8 May. Protests erupted following video footage of shooting

 

6 May-Nov 2020

• 19 year old Dreasjon Reed shot & killed by Police officer from Indianapolis
• 19 year old McHale Rose shot & killed by 4 policemen of Indianapolis
• Pregnant 23-year-old Ashlynn Lisby hit & killed by policeman’s vehicle
• Grand jury decides not to indict officer who killed Reed.
• Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced it would not indict the 4 police officers

 

12 May 2020

• Not Fucking Around Coalition (NFAC) is a black militia movement advocating black liberalism and separatism. They organized the protests in Georgia following murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

 

25 May 2020 – Murder of George Floyd

• Violence & protests not only in US but across the world.
• It also led to rioting, looting & arson caused $1-2billion in damages.
• 200 US cities had to impose curfew even by early June. By 8 June, 19 deaths related to protests.
• Over 30 States including Washington had to activate the National Guard.
• By end June 14000 were arrested.

• Capitol Hill Occupied Protest – a self-declared autonomous zone to protest murder of George Floyd – on 1 July the autonomous zone/occupied protest was officially cleared by the Seattle Police Dept.
• They distributed free food and medical supplies, planted community gardens, and held film screenings and workshops.”There was a food co-op, as well as a full medics corner with actual doctors from around the city that had volunteered, and had their own ambulance. • False Rumor Riot in Minneapolis about a suicide of Eddie Sole Jnr – 38 year African-American
• Sole had shot himself in the head.
• Police released CCTV footage of the suicide to stop the unrest
• Vandalism and looting of stores – 76 sites attacked with 4 businesses set on fire. 132 people arrested
