Who is the Easter Sunday Maha Molakaru? If the Cardinal knows, he must prove!

Nearly six years after the devastating Easter Sunday suicide bombings that claimed over 270 lives in Sri Lanka, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is still asking, “Who masterminded the attack?”—fully aware that eight Islamic suicide bombers carried out the coordinated massacre. While the public demands accountability and closure, the Cardinal continues to reject every official finding, raising doubts over his real intentions. It must be noted that Easter Sunday is not the only massacre Sri Lanka has endured. For three decades, the country was subjected to over 300 deadly terrorist attacks by the LTTE, killing civilians, clergy, politicians, and children. Yet, none of those atrocities have triggered this scale of multiple inquiries. It is deeply unfair to the victims of past terror—and to the taxpayers of this nation—to continually allocate funds for more inquiries into Easter Sunday, especially when several independent and state investigations as well as international investigations by world’s best intel agencies have already been concluded. If the Cardinal rejects every single inquiry and report to date, it implies he must have his own theory. Therefore, the time has come to invite him to appoint an internal investigation headed by himself and disclose, with verifiable evidence, who the real “maha molakaru” (mastermind) is. Cardinal’s Credibility on the Line: Name the Easter Mastermind or Stop Misleading the Nation. Taxpayers cannot fund inquiries till the person(s) Cardinal wants is named as “maha molakaru”.

The Cardinal has dismissed the findings of:

  • The Presidential Commission of Inquiry(which interviewed over 400 witnesses),
  • The Parliamentary Select Committee Report,
  • Investigations conducted by the Attorney General’s Department
  • Investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department, and
  • Even intelligence findings of international agenciessuch as the FBI, MI5, and RAW.

Despite these comprehensive efforts, the Cardinal remains unsatisfied. So perhaps it is time for the Cardinal to lead his own internal investigation. If every other process is discredited simply because they fail to name individuals of his preference, then let the Cardinal chair a Commission, gather his evidence, summon witnesses, and reveal the elusive “maha molakaru”—the alleged grand mastermind behind the Easter carnage.

Selective Justice or Political Strategy?

The Cardinal’s consistent rejection of findings raises an uncomfortable question: Is his call for justice genuine, or politically motivated? When evidence points away from his preferred narrative, he brands it incomplete or compromised. When Channel 4—a UK-based media outlet notorious for unverified claims—produced a sensational documentary, the Cardinal endorsed it within hours of its release. Yet, when Justice Imam’s independent report declared those very Channel 4 allegations a “hoax,” the Cardinal remained silent, if not dismissive.

Is this justice, or an attempt to manufacture public opinion against specific political actors?

Silence on LTTE-linked Church Figures

The Cardinal’s credibility crisis deepens when examining his silence over the Church’s historical entanglement with terrorism. Numerous priests and clergy were exposed over decades for providing safe haven, logistical support, and even ideological justification for the LTTE, a group responsible for over 30 years of terrorism, including the use of child soldiers and suicide bombers. These Church representatives were recently seen laying wreaths & kneeling before Prabakaran in commemoration of the LTTE dead ceremonies held in Mullaivaikkal. Some of these Catholic priests even head LTTE fronts.

Where was the Cardinal’s demand for accountability then or even now as LTTE remains banned both in Sri Lanka & internationally?

  • Did the Church hold internal inquiries into these priests & their links to terrorists?
  • Did the Church cooperate with authorities to cleanse its ranks of terrorist sympathizers?
  • Has the Cardinal ever publicly condemned these clergy?
  • Who was the “maha molakaru” that encouraged these clergy to have links with terrorists?

Selective outrage erodes the moral foundation upon which justice is demanded.

International Involvement: Ignored or Protected?

Ironically, the Cardinal himself has acknowledged the involvement of foreign intelligence and external actors. So why the hesitation to push for a deeper investigation into these networks? Why support Channel 4’s flimsy documentary while ignoring more credible claims from former CID officers, military officials, and even witnesses like Asanga Abeygunasekera, who revealed alarming allegations about Indian intelligence’s possible role?

If over 15,000 people reportedly knew of the Easter attack beforehand—including foreign diplomats and political insiders—then the question is no longer who bombed the churches, but who let it happen. Those who knew are as complicit as those who carried out the attack.

Faith Must Not Be Weaponized

We must also address the Cardinal’s political conduct, including his threats to topple elected governments and interfere with national policy. As a religious leader reporting to the Vatican, he must not misuse his moral authority to manipulate national sentiment, particularly when Sri Lanka’s national security apparatus is already under strain from internal subversion and foreign destabilization campaigns.

Justice for the Easter Sunday victims must not come at the cost of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty or security.

Time to Lead, Not Obstruct

Since Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith continues to reject every state and international investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks, it is time he steps forward and conducts his own inquiry. Tax payers money cannot be wasted on investigations that Cardinal is likely to reject unless the names he wants as “maha molakaru” are given.

Therefore, let him reveal the “maha molakaru” he so often speaks of. Let him prove, with evidence and transparency, who is truly behind the massacre. Otherwise, his continued interference only serves to deepen divisions, mislead the public, and shield the actual perpetrators. More importantly, it is unfair by the families of the victims who want a closure.

Justice must not be selective.
Accountability must not be politicized.
And truth cannot be politicized.
