27 February 2007 – US, Italian, German envoys hurt in LTTE attack

LTTE fired artillery shells at the helicopters carrying the US, Italian & Germany envoys to Batticoloa district. Pio Mariani the Italian ambassador was seriously injured. He was rushed to the hospital with head injuries. US ambassador Robert Blake was also among the diplomats travelling by helicopter and had minor injuries.

“It is the military’s fault for putting them in a war zone.…. No one informed us that the ambassadors were there,” LTTE spokesman. — PTI, Reuters

What is interesting about this statement is that – LTTE took Tamils as hostages/human shields into the war zone knowing that they shouldn’t.
