Ex-Gays/transgenders lobby against LGBTQ rights

This group call themselves “formers” – comprising individuals who formerly identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Some of their arguments are pertinent to Sri Lanka & other countries who are being politically pressured to change legislation to create a supra-class of people whose behavior cannot be compartmentalized except for what they & their lobbies claim them to be. While countries that had been forced to legalize are now seeing the damage that has occurred to people & families, the same should not happen in Sri Lanka & we should learn from these mistakes without falling prey to funds & lobbying.

They are lobbying against 2 Bills which are heavily supported by LGBTQ advocacy groups.

  1. Equality Act
  2. HR 3570 (Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act)

EQUALITY BILL, if passed

  • Bans discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, jury service, education & federal programs

HR 3570 BILL, if passed

  • Classifies conversion therapy – a medically debunked practice of trying to change a persons sexual orientation or gender identity for monetary compensation as a fraudulent practice.
  • The Bill claims it’s harmful for people to seek therapy to “overcome” their sexual orientation or gender identity – however many have returned to normal lives.

What former Gays/Transgenders in US say

“I don’t see the discrimination”

(they are actually questioning the data on hate crimes, academic research & news stories)

“I live in Portland [Oregon] and I don’t see the discrimination that LGBTQ people talk about,”  (former transgender man)

“They’re asking for certain rights in this legislation, but these are rights that they already have.”

“Sexual behavior should not be a protected right.”

“Changing the Civil Rights Act would create a super class for anyone identifying as LGBTQ at the expense of people who are not,”

“The Equality Act treats sexual preference as an elevated class and would strip people of religious freedom.”

“Unlike African Americans, who are among those protected against discrimination through federal civil rights law, LGBTQ people have not been subjected to systemic discrimination and abuse. This, is evidenced by the fact that gays have achieved clout and success as scientists, authors and politicians”

They claim that sexual orientation and gender identity are choices, and individuals displeased with their current status can “overcome” it through therapy and religious support.

This, however, is not a belief shared by the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association – both recipients of funding by those that fund LGBTQ lobbies.
